Clean tea
Thanks to Finlays, Argentine tea has a growing reputation as a “clean tea” due to our minimal use of agro-chemicals. One example of this is Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids (PA) – compounds that can be introduced during mechanized harvesting, when weeds are unintentionally collected with tea leaves. Finlays has been able to control and significantly reduce contamination risks through improved harvesting techniques and weed management strategies, ensuring our products meet EU standards for PA in a controlled way.
One such innovation is the introduction of livestock – such as sheep and cows – into tea plantations. These animals naturally manage weed growth, as they feed on them, reducing the need for herbicides while simultaneously improving soil coverage. We also compost organic waste from our processing plants, creating nutrient-rich material that regenerates the soil and decreases reliance on chemical fertilizers.
This approach reflects a broader commitment to regenerative agriculture, improving biodiversity, soil structure, and long-term productivity factors increasingly valued by environmentally conscious consumers and international markets.
A Promising Future
With its combination of high-quality and responsible production, effective residue management, limited use of agrochemicals, and focus on sustainability, Argentine tea is well-positioned to expand its presence in Europe. Companies such as Finlays Argentina demonstrate how ethical, innovative practices can meet both regulatory demands and consumer preferences.
As European demand for clean, responsible, and flavorful tea continues to grow, Argentine tea stands out — not just for what it is, but for how it’s made. It offers a product that satisfies strict safety standards, while supporting the environment and local communities.
